Buddy - Separation:

After I got out of college I ended up in a different state than my family. I tried to make it back to visit them at least a few times a year. On one such visit I was in my parents living talking to my grandfather. After talking about a few things he got quiet for a few minutes and then told me. "I miss your grandmother" She had died two years earlier. "I'm not living any more. I'm just going through the paces".  They started dating in their teens and got married when they were 21.  "I miss her terribly and want to be with her". They had been married for 65 years.

I didn't know what to say to him. It was all I could do not to cry.  I couldn't imagine living that long never mind spending 65 years married. I told him I'd miss him and didn't want to see him die just yet. I had always been close to my grandfather. He was a guy that wanted to have a son and ended up with daughters. So when he ended up with grandsons he over compensated.

He died later that year of pneumonia. I spoke to him on the phone the night before he died and we said good bye. That was 20 years ago. I miss him but I have some great memories I will always cherish.
