Drunken Brawl

It was a Friday in the middle December and an early blizzard was forecasted.  I was at work, it was my first job after graduating from school. We got a call from the company's headquarters at 3:30 to close the office down early and send everybody home because of the storm.  One of my co-workers, Mike and I had our pay checks cashed and found our first bar before 4:00.  I was also able to secure a hotel room for the night about a mile and half away that my father managed.   Eleven hours and a few bars later Mike and I were both very drunk. I don't know how much we had.  A lot of it is a blur.  We left the bar and walk out into the aftermath of the blizzard.  The city was the quietest I had ever seen it.  We saw only a few people and no cars which was unusual even at this late hour.  We started out on foot towards the hotel.  While we are walking a taxi cab came down the street towards us.  We wave him down and he stopped in the middle of the street.  As I

Summer Job as a Rent a Cop, Part 2

While I was in school I took a summer job for a security company.  They hired me to be a security guard for a university that had three campuses.  Over the summer they had me work all the different shifts on all three campuses filling in for people on vacation.  One of the campuses had trouble filling a midnight to 8:00AM shift so that is where I worked most of the time. The students were gone for the summer.  From midnight to 8:00AM besides me I assumed there wasn't anybody on campus beside the shift superviser.  From what I could tell the supervisor sat in the office, drank coffee and read the newspaper. From time to time he'd check in with me on the radio. My time was divided between sitting in a guard house at the school's main entrance, doing walking patrols through some of the buildings and driving around campus in a patrol car.   The hardest part of the job was dealing with the boredom and getting use to the crazy hours.  While I was in the guard house I

Buddy - Separation:

After I got out of college I ended up in a different state than my family. I tried to make it back to visit them at least a few times a year. On one such visit I was in my parents living talking to my grandfather. After talking about a few things he got quiet for a few minutes and then told me. "I miss your grandmother" She had died two years earlier. "I'm not living any more. I'm just going through the paces".  They started dating in their teens and got married when they were 21.  "I miss her terribly and want to be with her". They had been married for 65 years.   I didn't know what to say to him. It was all I could do not to cry.  I couldn't imagine living that long never mind spending 65 years married. I told him I'd miss him and didn't want to see him die just yet. I had always been close to my grandfather. He was a guy that wanted to have a son and ended up with daughters. So when he ended up with grandsons he over compens

Summer Job as a Rent a Cop

For a summer job back when I was in college a security company hired me to work as a guard at a university. On my first day they had me on the midnight to eight shift.  It started with the shift commander filling me in what the job entailed. This wast interrupted with a phone call.  He hangs up the phone and orders me and another guard to go handle a complaint of a loud disturbance in a dormitory.   This school was still in session.  They were coming to the end of their finals week.  As we head over to the dormitory I start asking questions about their procedures.  At my school I never heard of campus security being called for this type of thing.  It was all handled internally by the resident assistants on each floor and head resident that was usually a grad student.  He tells me don't worry about a thing just let me handle it.  I asked if he knew the students on the floor we were going to.  He tells me "Nope. I've been here 2 years and I don't know
